THE HISTORY OF MOTHER'S DAY
Celebrations of motherhood date back to ancient times, with the ancient Greeks and Romans holding festivals to commemorate mothers and mother goddesses.
Mother's Day, its more recent incarnation, however, began in 1908 when American activist Anna Jarvis held a memorial service for her late mother - considered to be the first Mother's Day celebration.
Jarvis campaigned to make Mother's Day a recognised holiday in the United States and succeeded. However, she later became disillusioned with how commercial the holiday became and campaigned against it in her later years. The United States still celebrates Mother's Day on the second Sunday in May (12th May 2024), as do many other countries.
THE HISTORY OF MOTHERING SUNDAY
Many people believe Mothering Sunday, as celebrated in the UK in March, to be the same as Mother's Day. However, technically Mothering Sunday began as a religious celebration of the Virgin Mary, also known as Mother Mary, on the fourth Sunday in Lent.
People were expected to return to their 'Mother Church' - their local church - and the celebration gave people the day off to join with their families and celebrate their mothers. The day increased in scope from thanking Mother Mary to celebrating their Mother Church to showing appreciation for all mothers... and Mothering Sunday was born. It has since become known colloquially as Mother's Day.
This is the reason why people in the UK celebrate Mother's Day or Mothering Sunday on a different date to many in the rest of the world.
Mother's Day has expanded to give thanks and appreciation to women who take on a parental role - mothers, stepmothers, mothers-in-law, grandmothers, aunts, and others who care for children. Presents are not necessary, but are usually appreciated! Children buy for mothers, husbands buy for wives, and women buy for mothers-in-laws and grandmothers.
